Closing of Hampshire College and the future of HCSSiM

Hello HCSSiM alumni, friends, and community,

We are writing to share with you the sad news that Hampshire College has announced it will be permanently closing during the next school year.  Kelly's vision of the program, our pedagogical practices, and our learning philosophy are all deeply rooted in Hampshire's vision, and we know much of your experience was touched by Hampshire's unique style.  There are no other schools like Hampshire left in operation, but we will continue carrying the vision forward.

As of July 2025, we are completely financially independent from Hampshire College.  This announcement has no effect on our plans for this coming summer — we look forward to welcoming c. 51 students and 17 staff to Hampshire's campus as HCSSiM 2026.  We will continue to operate the Summer Studies next year (and in the future) and keep welcoming students to our thriving community.  We have not negotiated a new host campus yet, but rest assured that, while Hampshire College may cease to exist, the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics will continue to thrive, keeping both Kelly's and Hampshire's spirit and vision alive.

However long ago it was that you played ultimate on the lawn, explored the Hampshire woods, sat in a class at Cole, or ate a meal at SAGA, we encourage you to come back to visit campus this year — for Kelly's celebration of life, for YP Day, or to give a Prime Time.  (If you are planning on coming for Kelly's remembrance and have not yet filled out the interest form, please do so soon so that we can confirm headcounts.)  Intents to visit for YP Day, including housing requests, can be addressed to Susan sgoff@hampshire.edu).  Offers for Prime Times should be sent to Amber (advNS@hampshire.edu).

We are very busy with the work assembling the people who will be HCSSiM 2026.  Please restrain your curiosity (sorry!) and refrain from asking us questions about future plans so that we can get through our heaviest annual workload season.  We promise we will share plans broadly when we have them.
