Hi Folks,
Two years ago, on the 51st Yellow Pigs Day, we shared our intention to transfer control of the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics from Hampshire College to the YP Math Foundation to ensure its continuation with the same philosophy and culture that Kelly so brilliantly established and nurtured. We are pleased to report that we have achieved this goal. As of July 1, 2025, the HCSSiM and the Foundation are now one. HCSSiM will continue to reside at Hampshire College for the foreseeable future, but under the direction and supervision of the Foundation. You will be glad to know that Kelly was able to participate in and see the completion of this important work.
This year’s program is the first under the auspices of the Foundation and this new agreement. The 53rd session of HCSSiM is off to a strong start and it’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the program. On June 29th, we welcomed 51 incredible students, each bringing curiosity, energy, and excitement to campus. The program hasn’t missed a beat — we’ve done well to keep the traditions and spirit of HCSSiM alive, just as Kelly would have wanted. YP Day was a huge success due to Amber’s brilliant idea to give alumni who were visiting pieces of the talk. She worked tirelessly, pulling together footage and organizing papers and transparencies so that each alum could present a favorite piece.
For those of us who knew Kelly, this summer has been bittersweet. His presence is deeply missed in both quiet moments and lively conversations.
As you know, the board consists of both student and faculty alumni, and we are fully committed to ensuring that the program continues to thrive for at least another 51 years. We have several exciting activities coming in the next few months:
Appointment of a new director of the program. We hope to be able to make an announcement by the end of the summer.
Completion of our first long-term strategic plan.
Premier of the documentary about the program created by Jon Roberts and Ming-I Huang. Many of you will have seen a teaser at the 2023 YP Math Day’s but the final version is truly spectacular.
Looking a bit further out we will be taking steps to create a more structured alumni group and to finally ensure the long-term financial health of the program with expanded financial aid.
On a more somber note, many of you have asked about a memorial service for Kelly. We are working with Allan on planning for this and an announcement will be forthcoming.
We look forward to working with all alumni so that future generations can enjoy the experience that we all had.
Yellow Pigs,
